Meet Amy Yancey

A professional headshot of Sommelier Amy smiling warmly in an elegant restaurant setting.

The Pocket Somm story began on the floors of Chicago’s high-intensity, Michelin-starred restaurants. Training under Master Sommeliers, Amy Yancey learned the trade through the heat of real-time service. In the grind of world-class dining, she put in the work to become a Certified Sommelier.

Now back in her hometown of Greenville, South Carolina, Amy brings that experience to a local level. She translates years of professional intensity into a relaxed, personal wine journey for her own community.

The Vision Behind the Brand

Amy lives with a rare, degenerative eye disease called Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP). Navigating the challenges of vision loss forced a creative redefinition of her career. It pushed her to step off the restaurant floor and find a more thoughtful, intentional way to stay in the wine industry. This journey led to the launch of Pocket Somm—a brand built on sensory storytelling, deep knowledge, and a commitment to making world-class wine accessible to everyone.

Philosophy

A Different Way to See Wine

At the heart of every great bottle is a connection between the soil, the soul, and the science behind it all. Pocket Somm focuses on wines grown with intention by people who treat their land as a living, breathing ecosystem. By prioritizing biodynamics and regenerative farming practices over pesticides and additives, these farmers produce wines that truly reflect the place and the hands that made them.

Amy specializes in sourcing allocated wines and those hard-to-find gems that rarely make it to a standard shelf. It is about bringing these thoughtful, elusive wines directly from the grower to your table.

An Approachable Way to Learn

Amy’s teaching style is fun and highly approachable. She is known for breaking down the science of wine to make it feel easy to understand and genuinely exciting, no matter your level of experience.
